It's just been confirmed. I do like viking stuff but I'm not sure how it will fit in the lore of the series. Not to mention that big cities back then were pretty small especially in Northern Europe.

The good thing is that vikings were big on exploration and they were more than brainless raiders. They were devious and trickery was one of their most efficient weapons so the whole cloak and dagger stuff could work in this setting.

My major concern is that we've had so many viking games and TV shows and everything so it's hard to feel hyped about a viking Assassin's Creed game. I guess piloting a longboat could be nice though.

I read there will be loads of customisation and the possibility of playing a female character and that's a relief because I'm really not thrilled by the main character's looks (nothing positive came to my mind when I saw that character looking like a WWF reject).

The main team working on this game is the one who was responsible for Origins (and Black Flag before that) so it's looking good.

Last but not least the eagle is going to be replaced by a raven and that's very fitting considering the setting. Assassin's Creed Valhalla 88613

Never cared about AC but the idea of raiding and pillaging does appeal to me. I may have to break my streak of not giving a fuck about AC.

Bonus points if I can play doing the work of the Trickster Loki!

You may be in luck since if they stick to the modification they've introduced in Odyssey you may be able to play a sarcastic bastard.

One thing that looks interesting is that they're going to introduce some settlement mechanics so you will be in charge of your own settlement. Investing in a settlement will make collecting gold and loot worth the hassle.

Just played one hour (the game unlocked at midnight over here) and it's definitely fun once the introduction is over. You get to pick and choose your fighting style depending on the weapon and you have three different sorts of bows. There is also a Pathfinder mode in which the UI is more low key (wink wink) and you have to actually explore to find stuff. Assassin's Creed Valhalla 88613

EDIT: It's possible to change the hair colour of the main character. I can play a brunette. I'm so happy! Very Happy

I got my hands on a flail today. Waving it in combat feels very rewarding. Assassin's Creed Valhalla 74522

Funny that it takes about 15 hours to get to the title screen.

It's equally funny that you can't get your hands on a one handed sword (you get your share of anachronistic weapons though).

I got my hands on a two handed sword so I'm good. Assassin's Creed Valhalla 58451

Can you play with a sword in each hand?

I like dual blading.

Ironically you can dual wield pretty much any one handed weapons but swords are not among them so if you're happy using two axes or a hammer or dirks or even a flail it's cool.

You could also dual wield two shields which is totally weird.

I wanted the sword and shield style for my gal so I ended up going for a perk that allows you to have a two handed weapon used as a one handed weapon (so you can dual wield them).

It's not ideal and it looks a bit anime to be honest (but then again most weapons are not 100% historically accurate) but it does work and that's what matters in the end:

On a less positive note, as much as I like roaming the English countryside this is a weird setting for an AC game. The largest urban areas feel like small villages compared to the grand locations in the two last games... I guess that can't be helped but the result is that it feels a lot more like playing AC 3 (the one set in America during the Revolutionary War) since you spend most of your time outside big cities. What this game needs is a big metropolis like Constantinople (which could have worked considering that there were Viking mercenaries there). Paris will be in a DLC but at that time it wasn't that big either. Anyway as far as monastery raiding simulators go this one is fun but it feels a bit like a waste considering it does bring back some of the stealth elements that the series had discarded in the last two games (and most notably the social blending element). What this game needs is level scaling...

Let me explain, I've been exploring a bit and my gal gets killed if she gets cornered because enemies are of a high level and one shot her. That's not a challenge, that's level gating just like in The Witcher 3 and I wish they'd stop doing that.

The irony is that we have a huge open world and we can't explore it because enemies are too high level and there is no in game justification for it.

I mean in Might and Magic 6 you had some areas where the smallest monsters were dragons, that made sense but here like in The Witcher 3 you have regular looking mobs that will kill you because they are artificially buffed.

Since I tend to be contrary I go out of my way to explore "forbidden" areas and sometimes I manage to get by thanks to my bows and arrows (assassination is pretty useless when a foe outranks you) but it's a bit of a pain and losing because of that is just stupid.

I've been playing on hard and it's a bit of a turn off to be honest especially since after playing Origins and Odyssey for so long I had reached the level cap in these games ages ago so it's been a long time since I had to deal with that issue. These games allowed you to have the enemies scale to your level if you choose and it made the game enjoyable. In Valhalla I'm concerned that it's possible to level too much and trivialise enemies because of that. If that happens the only solution is to up the difficulty and gimp yourself by not using skill points to lower your power ranking and frankly this is far from ideal...

I really like the stamina based combat (you have to be careful if you start spamming attacks that don't connect) since it's dynamic, visceral and after you've unlocked a few skills it can be pretty brutal and fun especially since enemies can use the same skills against you but getting your ass handed to you because you've run into a foe that is arbitrarily buffed is just terrible design.

PostSubject: Re: Assassin's Creed Valhalla   Assassin's Creed Valhalla I_icon_minitimeWed Mar 17, 2021 11:14 am

I've finished the main story so I thought I'd comment with the benefit of hindsight.

The game is unbalanced and many events are still buggy months after release and that's just a shame. There is no way around it, they really messed up with that release. Covid or no covid that is no excuse and the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 may be even worse doesn't alter the fact that games shouldn't be released in such a state especially AAA games that belong to a flagship franchise.

With that out of the way there is a huge problem and that's how streamlined this game is. They put in a skill tree but it's irrelevant since you can easily max out everything if you explore a bit.

Levels are the deciding factor here, everything else is irrelevant. Loot is very poor and pointless and is only used for upgrades that pale in comparison to power levels.

Fighting the same enemy using the same tactics will work if your character's power level is high enough and it will fail if it isn't. The whole thing feels arbitrary and completely at odds with the very idea of having a challenge. Either the game is just one sided and unfair or it becomes a boring stroll in the park.

The pacing in the main story is all over the place. Some bits are actually pretty good but they feel out of sequence and the whole thing ends on a totally unepic note that completely falls flat. I understand a more intimate and introspective conclusion could have worked if the game had prepared us for it but we were lead to expect some big confrontation that never happened.

The biggest fights of them all is relegated to a cutscene in a dream sequence and that's such a missed opportunity especially in a game that almost completely shuns stealth in favour of straightforward hack and slash action.

All in all coming from Odyssey it does feel like the series have taken a few steps backwards and lost its way. Odyssey may not have been about assassins and templars but it did work as a game and was entertaining even after you reached the end of the game.

In Valhalla once you finish the main story you're left with some mind numbing filler activities and river raids that are repetitive and quickly get incredibly boring.

This game would have worked a lot better if it had followed the old games formula instead of trying so hard to be a huge but mostly empty open world. The story outstays its welcome and it feels like the game is devised to waste the player's time and that's a cardinal sin as far as games are concerned.

I have very little hope for the expansions. Best case scenario they'll manage to increase the challenge somewhat but I don't expect them to turn things around.

I'm not saying it's a total loss but if you give it a go then make sure to pace yourself in order not to get burned with all the boring and useless, pointless stuff that makes up the core of the experience.

That's one way of putting it.

I think my problem is that I expected them to build on what they had accomplished with the previous title instead of taking an almost entirely different direction and scrapping the challenge while switching away from side stories to showcase short events (almost Easter Eggs) instead.

Plus historical accuracy is nowhere to be found and they couldn't be bothered with including a Viking sword for the main character (there was one in AC Rogue).

I mean Odyssey did have its share of historical missteps but you had to have more than a passing knowledge of the Peloponnesian War to notice.

That and catering to diversity for no reason other than indulging into tokenism. I mean you have a Viking settlement in 9th century Britain and the shopkeeper is Asian, there is an African Viking, an African blacksmith stand in and two Middle Eastern dudes (I won't even mention the immortal kid in charge of the in game store where you can buy premium items).

The only ones who really have a well explained reason for being there are the Arabs (it's Assassin's Creed after all) in a 13th Warrior/Eaters of the Dead sort of backstory. With hindsight I wish we could play as one of them.

The Chinese lady and the African Viking are never developed all that much and it's a pity and definitely lazy writing (and the reason why I don't like the way they're depicted).

I could go on and on ranting about how they messed things up and missed opportunities with this game.

They've reintroduced social stealth (i.e. having your character use his or her environment to blend in) but they're not making any use of it. Even worse, stealth is almost impossible to pull off and the game discourages any stealthy approach.

They've introduced seasonal festivals (which is a bit baffling for a single player game) to keep players engaged over time but they didn't put in the effort and the Spring festival is pretty much a reskin of the Winter one.

It's all very pointless. I've uninstalled the game and started playing Odyssey again.

I'm pretty sure that people who are not returning fans will enjoy it a lot more especially if they don't mind historical inaccuracies (Renaissance weapons in the Viking Era for instance) and if they don't try to complete all the objectives on the map (for the record many are still bugged months after release).
