Started a character. Female good in science, sneak and energy weapons. Everything else falls between 15 and 17. Intelligent, some what crafty.

Are there any DLCs that I should get now or should I wait?

Any hints, tips, suggestions? Don't worry about spoilers as I have read about the game.

The DLCs are worth it if you like the game and want more of the same but you can delay getting them if you're not sure about them. They also increase the level your character can reach and give access to more perks and traits (especiallly the Skilled Trait which is undisputably the best Trait in the game).

For a first run I'd suggest refraining from adding mods. Keep them for your second run. Unless you want to add basic textures and really straightforward stuff.

You may want to keep the Wild Wasteland Trait for a second run as well. I like it a lot but many people don't. If you play without it then you may get a better appreciation of the zany elements it introduces in the game.

As far as character creation is concerned you can't go wrong. The stats aren't as important as they were in other Fallout games. Intelligence gives you a few more skillpoints but the difference between a good score and a very high score is not as huge as it was in the other games in the series.

Keeping stats at an average of 6 will allow you to do pretty much what you want in the game.

I don't want to put any spoilers but the stat that is really useful is Endurance as you can
Spoiler:

Not that it is needed to complete the game.

If you put too many points in Luck you will have no problem getting rich in casinos.

Strength is useful for carrying stuff and direct damage.

Perception shouldn't be raised above 6 since you can increase it to 7 with some headgear and unless I'm mistaken the game never checks for values above 7 in this particular stat.

Low Intelligence dialogue is broken. Most lines are not modified and I suspect that they ran out of time. It's a pity and I wouldn't advise playing a character with less than 4 points in Intelligence.

Charisma is not very useful to be honest. It opens up some perks like Animal Friend and 6 points is enough to get the most of it.

Agility doesn't modify your speed in game. I know it says so on the tin but it's simply not true. If you use VATS you may want some Agility but once again the difference between 6-7 and 10 is not huge.

The best way to plan a character is to find out which perks you want to take and affect points to stats accordingly.

The skills that are tagged are character creation don't matter that much after a few levels since you are free to add skillpoints to any skills at level ups.

There is a mod that changes the way the game works so you have to use skills to increase them (like in the Elder Scrolls) and you may want to give it a try in another run.

I'm tallking about several runs because if you want to complete the game you will have to play three times and side with different factions. There are enough possibilities for a different game despite the necessity to repeat a few quests.

Thanks, Cara, I am a restarter so I will probably try a few different things before I finally really play the game. I am able to play the game on Ultra with this machine it is the default settings.

A mod that I would be interested in is one that lets me do more with the way the character looks.

DLC? Honest Hearts. Most don't like it, but I absolutely LOVED it.

As for you character, science and energy weapons never drew me in. I prefer the good ol' guns skill. I went lots of agility and perception to complement that. For a science-focused character, I have no idea.

But, yeah, play a clean playthrough first.

Guns are probably a good choice for your first character. I think the game is balanced to prefer guns slightly. Explosives are also very powerful in NV, and very plentiful.

For future playthroughs, the Robco Certified mod ads an entirely new character build possibility. Tag science and repair, and fight with robots. Science and repair basically become your weapons skills, as your robots are your weapons. It is particularly well suited to one of the factions you can side with in the main quest.

Ah, yes, explosives. Considering that your first enemies are likely going to be the Power Gangers (unless you feel like being a jerkass to the people who saved your life), you'll have a bunch of dynamite straight off.

A beginner tip I find quite useful is to throw grenades (or dynamite) using VATS. Your hit chances may be very low, but you don't actually have to hit them with the grenade. Just aim for the feet and let them get caught in the blast.

Also, one huge tip: Roleplay. Makes it so much better. Think as your character, experience the world through your character's eyes, choose the things your character would choose, act as your character would act. Become your character.

Thanks, Kana, Dragon. My current and first character is good hearted, likes to help people, a little innocent. Not a fool and determined to survive.

That was an interesting beginning. A bit weird in my opinion. One thing I really liked about DAO were the origins.

Especially when you talk your way right into Benny's suite and shoot him point blank in the head with a revolver, watching his brains explode all over the place.

Nope. The best is to kill Benny with his own gun (there is actually a challenge for that). Twisted Evil

Another thing about FNV is that lockpick and science works at 25/50/75/100 so aiming for these values can be more useful (just like in Fallout 3).

Check out my modlist anything under textures is good. You may want to get 4 Aces HiRes and RegRes textures and if you like casinos give this mod of mine a try: Caravan and Casino FNV themed playing cards.

Also check out the FACE/BODY MOD category at the bottom of the list if you want your character to look better.

If you have any question regarding FNV mods feel free to ask I'm sure one of us FNV fanatics will be able to help you out.

Last but not least considering DLCs I may not be the most unbiased person out there but I like them all. You should get them if you feel you really like the game and want to play it several times. Dead Money is the odd one, it may not have as much replay value and some parts can be annoying but the story is simply incredible. Honest Hearts is a real treat for any player who likes exploring every corner and looking under every rock. Most players who didn't like it rushed through it and never saw what was beneath the surface.

I would buy Honest Hearts just for the dialogue with Joshua Graham while he's reloading his infinite guns, to be honest Laughing

Cara, I will be sure to check your mod list. I like to add a few at a time, play with those and then add others. My biggest problem right now is learning the controls. I found the VAT by accident and then had a hard time getting out of it. I found inventory which is called something else.

I am such a re-starter I am already thinking about my next character. I think I have more fun creating characters than I do playing a game. I'll stick with this one for a while. Then the real fun begins. I usually enjoy my second play through more than the first.

I am having trouble learning the controls. I found the VAT by accident once but can't find it again. I also am armed and want to disarm. I'm walking around ready to shoot something which isn't very friendly. How do I put the weapon away? Help.

I love the dialogue. Just a short time in the Game and it already feels ten times better than Oblivion and Skyrim.
When is @4 coming out. yegads why did I waste all that money on Skyrim when I had this jewel?

V is for Vats.

R is for Reload.

H is for Holster.

I can't remember the rest as I'm using a controller for the PC (it's very convenient but aiming with it takes some getting used to).

I'm glad you're enjoying this game. Wink

I have very little expectations for Fallout 4 since it is going to be made by Bethesda... Which means that at best it will be on par with Fallout 3 which means that compared to FNV it will suck big time.

Casual players seem to like Fallout 3 more so Fallout 4 will sell anyway.

Keep in mind that many devs from Fallout 2 worked for Obsidian on FNV and that alone explains why the game is so good.

One of the lead designers for FNV is Chris Avellone who was also lead designer for Planescape: Torment!

Right there is a plus. Tooke a real genius to come up with Planescape/Torment.

Thanks for the help. I'll check the Wiki. The graphics could be improved. Not bad but all that desert and sunlight is hard on my eyes.

I love that radio. I think I am already addicted.
I bought dynamite as Kana suggested.

Should I join a faction or stay indpendent. As said my first character is a bit of goody two shoes. Scientific type.

H doesn't work in Fallout 3 and NV. To holster your weapon, you press and hold R (or whatever your reload key might happen to be). This question gets asked a lot, because it doesn't show up in the key mapping settings.

Maybe you were thinking of Bloodlines. Smile

Thanks Kana. I must have been thinking about Bloodlines...

About Planescape Torment, you have to bear in mind that they didn't make the setting. Sigil and all that stuff is from the pen and paper books.

On the subject of FNV you can change the brightness in the settings. There is an ENB around that should work for the game. If you want the game to look better even on Ultra you should get some texture mod (I recommend 4Aces's).

As for factions you can choose whatever course of action you want. If you screw things up you will always one path open to you. There are four different endings for the main quest with many differences as far as minor factions are concerned. Take your pick according to your character. You don't need foreknowledge to decide. Go with the flow and see what NPCs from the different factions have to tell you. Wink

Back playing FNV. Am having trouble figuring out where I should go. I find that direction, map marker, hard to figure out.

I have the DLCs installed but haven't activated Dead Money.

Have added one mod by Giskard which makes the night much darker and is supposed to take away the psychic enemies. Don't know if that works yet.

I would be wary of mods that make the night darker, as you'd have to rely on night vision mods or find a safe place to hide because you can't see anything. It's the desert and there aren't so many clouds. I'm not familiar about Nevada but I know that in deserts lights show up from very far away and that the sky isn't that dark during the night (deserts are great places to watch the stars because of the absence of clouds).

Regarding psychic enemies, well FNV is not Oblivion. Let's leave it at that.

There is no reason not to activate Dead Money. You can't be sucked in by the DLC without knowing it (you have to travel to a different world space so you'll know when you get there).

I play without the HUD so I don't rely on map markers (I still have them on the map in the Pipboy menu -you can zoom in and out by the way).

The game doesn't restrict you much except that if you go in dangerous areas you'll find some real challenge (which is nice).

I've been playing FNV with mods for quite some time now so if you want some pointers or hints I'm sure I can give you some clues. At the end of the day you don't have to stick to quests that much to have fun.
