Expeditions: Conquistador Fc10b6536dc6973905200fe9d3964d53e57f950c

Expeditions: Conquistador is a turn based game with an interactive map, events and tactical combat. There are RPG elements as you pick your crew members, get XP from quests and then decide how to level up your party members.

Expeditions: Conquistador 20af874653459f787462f6d8fe15d9c83d2762cc

Managing various resources in order to survive is no easy task especially when some events start happening and I really like how events work (it reminds me of gamebooks). The combat part is rather good with a cover system and different abilities. The best thing is the control zone which means that leaving the hexagon next to an enemy will trigger an attack of opportunity so you have to think about how you're moving your guys on the grid (and use abilities to stun or push enemies if you want to avoid these attacks).

Expeditions: Conquistador 1c9423205ce1f1a5db7a3ff97849c2f0c899bcfe

The game looks nice and the strategic elements are well implemented. The only thing that can be surprising is having both male and female conquistadors. Female conquistadors were not unheard of but they were more the exception than the rule so the game may be taking things a bit too far.

Expeditions: Conquistador 9c2cb9175fd0be0311b0995b087c984ad1de9a48

Managing a party made of characters with different and often conflicting traits forces you to make significant decisions. All in all it's a pretty interesting game.

Hum. I didn't know the game. I have to admit, it sounds cool, I might give it a try. I've seen it's 25 hours of gameplay. Isn't that a bit short?

I haven't completed it so I have no idea how long it will take me. I've been enjoying the journey so far and really taking my time, in this game you don't have to rush into things if you don't want to.

IMO a longer game is not necessarily a better game. When playing a game I find that things tend to drag along at some point (either it gets boring because you have to go through some repetitive segments or you've reached the level cap or it feels like there is no challenge left) so it may not be a bad thing (I don't have enough time to finish games already so 25 hours is enough for me).

I've started two different games to see how much replay value the game has. In my first game my conquistador is a real bastard, smug, proud to a fault, arrogant, greedy and convinced of his superiority over the "savages" of the New World. In my second game my leader is rather progressive and I've chosen to play him as an open-minded scholar. So far despite the quests being the same I've seen some radical differences in the way things play out. I've picked different followers (so follower related events are different) but so far my bastard is much more popular with his crew and I will resume my good guy game once I'm done.

It's an indie title but it doesn't look bad (it's not spectacular either but for fans of old schools isometric RPGs it looks good enough).

I've looked around and it's currently available in a bundle. Even if you don't care about the other games the price for the bundle is only a quarter of the retail price for Expeditions: Conquistador. Definitely worth it if you ask me.

Thanks for the link, Cara! I looked it up on Steam and it was 20$, so 4,99$ for the game plus 11 others (even if they turn out to be rubbish) is a pretty good deal. How does the bundle work? Do you download a game key or can you download the whole game right off that site?

This is really the type of game I like. The kind of open sandbox / create your team / RPG type of game. The '98 Eidos game Gangsters : Organized Crime had soooooooo much potential in that respect. But it was a deeply flawed game that never really delivered. Even today, I sometimes feel the urge to play it a bit, but stop after a while when I'm reminded how awful it is after 11 or 12 turns. That was a game on the brink of greatness that just didn't deliver.

You get Steam keys. I didn't purchase this particular bundle but I've bought Rock of Ages and it's zany in a pythonesque way. I can't say anything about the other titles.

There is a game that may interest you but it's still a bit pricey, Omerta City of Gangsters. It looks great and has some cool features but it's a bit bland when it comes to the actual gameplay. I've tried the demo and I'm waiting for a sale because it's definitely not worth the money that they're asking. From what I've seen the combat seems interesting though (it reminds me of X-Com).

Another game that I've been playing and which turned out to be quite interesting is The Banner Saga. It's not without faults but it is incredibly beautiful and it's another turn based isometric tactical game with survival elements (like Expeditions: Conquistador).

Speaking of turn based isometric tactical games I've bought Gorky 17 (which I've never played before) and it's a really interesting title. It plays a bit like chess and has a great atmosphere. It shows its age but I don't really mind. Isometric games tend to age rather gracefully.

I knew Omerta city of Gangsters existed, and I knew I was interested in buying it but on closer look, changed my mind. Don't remember why, though.

The main part of the gameplay is a bit boring. It feels like playing monopoly, you buy property and improve it then you expand, invest and pay off cops so they look the other way.

There are events during which you get to shoot people and as far as I can remember that part wasn't so bad (including action points and different combat options). All in all I would get it if the price was much much lower. Since I'm in no hurry I can wait.

This reminds me that Call of Cthulhu the Wasted Land is now available on Steam. It's another isometric turn based tactical game and it has some cool features but it has been ported to the PC and it shows.

PostSubject: Re: Expeditions: Conquistador   Expeditions: Conquistador I_icon_minitimeMon Mar 17, 2014 2:07 pm

I decided to invest a big 5 bucks and buy the bundle containing Conquistadors. I didn't have too much time to try it out (played an hour or two last night. Went to sleep waaay too late because of it...  Expeditions: Conquistador 435135 I'm kind of antisocial at work this morning... Laughing). I like the game so far. The music is really great (I happen to like latino music. I've been watching Dexter and since it's taking place in Miami, there's a lot of cuban/latino music. I dunno why, but it touches something inside me.) and I like how the RPG elements are integrated. They didn't have the budget for high graphics à la Mass effect where you see the 3D character speak the lines. Instead, you have beautifully drawn characters to show who you are talking to. The text also has a lot of emotional indicators so we have a better grasp of how the NPCs are reacting. The combat system also reminded me of games like Heroes 3. The learning curve isn't that hard, I thought. I look forward to really playing it.

I also bought the Alpha Protocol game. I haven't downloaded it yet, but I paid sufficient money to also have the key for the Shogun 2 : Total War game. Never played it (or the first one) before. It also contained the keys for Medival 2 : Total War and Rome : Total War, but I already had those two games (I played Medival 2 A LOT). The bundle also contained a Sega Genesis emulator for a couple of Sega games, including Comix Zone and Golden Axe. Oh. My. God. I had those two games on the family Sega back in the day. We didn't have a lot of games, so I played those two extensively. It brought back so many memories... Smile

One thing though, I would have preferred to recruit your party in game rather than selecting it outright in the character creation screen. Kind of how you recruit party NPCs in Baldur's Gate. It adds a history with the characters (I did recruit one character in game just before the first mission. But I think all party NPCs should be recruit the same way, through events).

Alpha Protocol is pretty cool. I've enjoyed it a lot and I've started my second game (first game as a recruit and now as a veteran agent) to see how things play out with different choices.

I remember Comix Zone as well. That must bring back some memories! Smile

I see what you mean by that but it makes sense because the party was recruited in Spain before setting off for the New World (and they all have their own backstory).

You can still recruit characters once the game has started like you've said -with events- so it's not that bad.

I'm glad you like the way Expeditions: Conquistador looks. I really enjoy the art. IMO it's better to have beautiful static pictures instead of 3D talking heads that end up looking cheap.

I really like the combat because of the attacks of opportunity. Gaining control over the battlefield is of paramount importance to maximize the effect of choke points.

And I totally agree with you about the music. It's a real treat and they really got that right. Wink

I'm curious. What strategy do you use in the game? How do you control and/or create your choke points?

In the 1 or 2 mock tutorial battles I fought, I played it rather defensively. I hid my characters behind obstacles to block ranged attacks and I waited their melee fighters and tried to attack them in groups and then rushing the melees.

You can use the terrain to your advantage to draw enemies toward your guys (you will get barricades and traps as well) so provided that your foes didn't catch your guys in the open with their pants down they should be able to get into position.

Nothing wrong with a defensive stance by the way. Taking cover and getting some shots in will help.

Don't forget about the special abilities (stun is really useful).

I don't know how you use equipment, so far I've tried giving it all to one guy so it would make a difference (with a medic to heal that guy who is the first in line for promotions).

Yeah, that was my second question. What do you do in regards to equipment. If you give everything to one character, isn't that putting all your eggs in one basket? And what would be the best option in regards to promotions? Promote a character until he's lieutenant, than promoting another until he's sergeant and so on, or spreading it around? And are there characters classes that offer better options in promotion attributes? Warriors, Scouts, etc.

I put all my eggs in one basket but that basket is pretty tough. With a medic at hand I find that it works so far (just make sure that you have an extra doctor away from the fighting, you don't want both of your doctors to be out of commission). The problem with spreading around equipment is that the effect is pretty marginal whereas by using it all with one guy you can see a definite improvement.

As for promotions I'm still on the fence. Keep in mind that you get a sizable increase in skills when you level up so it may be a good idea to promote guys that can improve the skills you need for your party. Soldiers make great guards and they are great in a fight so it makes sense for me to promote them because I have other tasks covered (and having better guards could help).

Hunting is not a problem for me because I've invested in it to make sure I wouldn't run out of food. For my first party I went all the way with tactics and hunting and for my second party I picked diplomacy and hunting. Maybe I'm wrong but having enough food so my guys don't starve is a priority.

What did you use for your party leader Tri? It would be nice to compare notes. Wink

And are promoted soldiers more loyal? Should you promote party members sharing your views so they can uphold your decisions to the others, or should you promote in order to build loyalty?

The character I started on is a kind of open-minded, peaceful scholar, so I invested in diplomacy. I might start over because I hadn't known resources were so costly. Hunting is really important.

I also chose party members that had about the same views. I had 1 doctor, 1 scholar, 1 hunter, 3 scouts and 4 soldiers. But when I'll start over, I might go to 2 doctors, 1 scholar, 2 hunters, 2 scouts, 3 soldiers.

Soldiers are more motivated if they like the choices you make. If you want to keep things simple you're better off taking party members that share the same views. Conflicting views can lead to problems. Be careful with events as well. The game is not very forgiving when it comes to events and if you make the "wrong" choice you may really annoy your party (I haven't found out what the exact consequences were but it can't be good).

Narcissistic characters will be pissed if you promote somebody else but IMO it's best to promote someone according to your needs (if you can do both then go for it).

Quote :
2 doctors, 1 scholar, 2 hunters, 2 scouts, 3 soldiers

That's pretty much my exact setting and I find that it works out. I could use more guys for guard duty at times but I still manage.

Not having enough hunters can be a real problem if you don't get enough food. Scouts can be handy but the bonuses they get are not as vital as getting food (especially at the start).

Only one doctor may be a problem if you get a defeat and need to do some healing. FYI in this game losing a fight doesn't necessarily mean it's game over. But If you role play you can end up in pretty dire situations (just like real life conquistadors).  Razz

One thing is really annoying : forced to only select 6 party members for a battle AT ALL TIMES. I get it when you "select a team to scout ahead and fight someone". But when you're camping and you get attacked by rebels, you have 10 or 12 leveled up units swarming your camp from every direction. And you still have to select only 6. It happened once and there's no way to survive in that hell... :/

I think it's a bit like Mount & Blade. You get to select a number of party members to represent your troops because having everyone on the field wouldn't work.

In the events it looks like named characters are only a few members of your party (vs an entire expeditions).

By the way the game can be a bit unfair at times (some events are clearly not balanced) and it seems to me that we're not meant to win every battle. In fact from a roleplaying point of view there is something that I find oddly satisfying in losing a fight.
