Risen 2 Dark Waters Empty
PostSubject: Risen 2 Dark Waters   Risen 2 Dark Waters I_icon_minitimeTue Jan 22, 2013 11:41 pm

I'm a huge fan of Risen and have played it several times, so, although I expected a reasonable game, I really didn't expect to enjoy Risen 2 more than it's predecessor.

Both are third person adventures, both have solid stories that generate cause and effect with a beginning, middle and end. In Risen 2 you play a pirate with a number of companions available who are actually useful. I'm not a fan of using companions. I play Skyrim without them unless forced by the quest. In Risen 2, the fact your companions get stuck in and not stuck in your way is a bonus.

Risen 2 is an exciting game. With Patty, Captin Steelbeard's daughter from Risen, you journey across the sea to various islands, tracking down legendary weapons, digging up treasure and deciding which faction you want to side with. You have plenty of choice regarding how you develop your character and teachers are to be found in every port. I'm focusing on being a thief and just love the trained monkey. NPCs talk to it, ask what it's up to, does it want a drink - silly detail, but wonderfully immersive. I can't wait to be far enough along in the game to get a parrot. Very Happy

General control of your character is straightforward but fights are another story. Combat in Risen 2 has been slated for being poor but, like Dungeon Lords and Venetica, you need to use timing and avoidance to make the most of your abilities. You also use both hands. Your right has a sword, spear or voodoo doll, your left a pistol, coconut, knife or sand/salt. Plus you can kick an enemy. The only two handed weapon I've found so far is a musket. So far, the Boss battles have been hard, but enjoyable. This is not an easy game, the combat is difficult to master, but very satisfying once you have. I've also noticed that often there is more than one way to complete a quest.

Yes I did say a voodoo doll is a weapon. Rather than using magic as we gamers generally understand and know it, Risen 2 has voodoo. At times, it's quite brilliant and has given me some of the biggest laughs I've had from a game for a long time. There is a lot of humour present in the dialogue. Combine this with taking someone over by waving a doll at them and.... well, I'll let you find out.

The dialogue also contains a fair amount of cussing - but then you're amongst pirates. Joking aside, this is not a game you would want your children listening to, the language is very adult. But, if you enjoy action packed, third person RPGs, have a look at this one. It's very enjoyable and I'm totally hooked.

Very nice review, Sue. I have watched some of the videos and it does look like an interesting game. Maybe by the time I finish New Vegas it will be on sale. I thought the animations a little awkward in the videos so would rather wait for a good sale.

That's interesting Nakia as on my machine I've noticed no problems with the animations. I'll have to go and watch the videos!

I've just started playing this game, it's a bit slow but I like that. Dialogues are really fun and that's a plus. There are some odd things (a pirate who can't swim seems rather strange) but the game definitely has a great personality.

It's a lot of fun. The combat takes some getting used to, but I really enjoyed Risen 2. It's a good idea to have a look at the skill trees and decide early on what approach you wish to take as it's easy to spread Glory points too thinly.

Enjoy!

I'm going for a high Cunning build so I can use the coolest dialogue options. Money is still scarce. I've found a permanent boost (Hero's Crown) and it makes my character suck a little less. I've just started making friends with the pirates.  Risen 2 Dark Waters 36163

Risen 3 is getting a pretty big update for 64 bit systems.

I love these games. Smile

Me too Smile

I also love the Gothic series.

I've yet to properly get into Risen 3 - I've played enough to know it's right up my street. The idea of a big update is exciting. bounce

I've never played any of the Gothic games but I've decided to grab the first Risen during the sale. Considering how much I'm enjoying Risen 3 I think I'll probably get into the other Risen games once I'm done.

Exploration is the strong point and the content is definitely there... That and the humour (it goes without saying).

What I like about Risen 3 is that it never gets too big and it never feels like a chore (which is my problem with Dragon Age Inquisition). I could go on forever hunting treasures and legendary items or looking for rare plants and herbs. Smile
