I've started playing Inquisitor. It's a very old school game and that is both a good thing and a bad thing. You're not told where you have to go and you have to pay attention to the story. It can be frustrating at times especially in the beginning.

For instance it took me quite a while to find out how to learn spells (you simply have to double click on a scroll and I learned that by accident). I wish the in game information was more detailed. Also the game can be unforgiving meaning that you may have to do a lot of backtracking if you managed to get yourself into a tough spot and have to go back to town (getting poisoned is a real pain).

There are also some fights that can't be won unless you use some tricks (at least at lower levels). It's definitely worth investing in Speed (otherwise it takes forever to go anywhere) and especially if you want to pull off a Benny Hill (always a worthy option if you have a ranged follower because going toe to toe with some foes can be deadly).

I appreciate having to actually think since it's a nice change and modern games don't really encourage that sort of gaming. But I do understand why the game is either loved or hated. It takes a BG veteran to come to terms with some of the annoyance (especially at the beginning). The game doesn't even have a loot all option. Even worse it doesn't have a repair all option so you have to repair each item separately (and let's face it that can be a pain in the long run considering how fast items get damaged).

Some game mechanics are interesting but could have been implemented in more satisfying ways. Stamina can be a huge pain (just like in Arcanum) but stacking on potions is not difficult. The problem is that casting spells takes both Mana and Stamina which means you have to carry more potions around even as a spellcaster.

I haven't been too far into the game but despite some interesting choices (you can be righteous, dastardly or wicked) the game looks a bit linear (much like BG 1, you can tackle different areas but you have to complete some of them to advance the story and unlock other areas).

All in all it's really fun for old school gamers. The mystery story is appealling and the art direction is solid despite the unimpressive sprites and animations. The UI is cool and item information is very extensive (you usually have several paragraphs for each item). I really like the music. It's not very varied but it manages to convey the atmosphere of the game.

Of course if you care about graphics, 3D stuff and games that don't challenge you (and sometimes possibly frustrate you) Inquisitor is not the right pick for you. But if you like games with plenty of text, games that reward you for looking for extra stuff and if you miss isometric games from the good old days like Diablo and Baldur's Gate you may want to check it out. Just a fair warning though, for what looks like a dialogue oriented game it's pretty heavy on the hack and slash action (in many ways it reminds me of Lionheart the Legacy of the Crusader) so don't expect to get anywhere if you don't want your inquisitor to do a lot of fighting (be it with a sword, a bow or spells).

FYI it's on sale this week end for a few euros on steam, for the price of a drink it's definitely worth getting if you like old school games.

Another sale on Steam; under two euros it's a real bargain.

I bought it a few months ago, but I haven't had time yet to download and play it. But it's on my list! Smile
