PostSubject: Fallout 4 News   Fallout 4 News I_icon_minitimeThu Jun 04, 2015 7:23 am

It's coming and it's official:

I can't say I'm thrilled about a new Fallout game made by Bethesda. If anything I hope they will improve on Fallout 3 and make a decent sandbox game with plenty of things to explore but I doubt they will be able to come up with a story that can compare to Fallout New Vegas.

Bethesda's focus on the 50s retro futuristic look is a stylistic choice that I respect but it's a slippery slope, it may be enough to get a certain Fallout vibe but it's not enough to make a Fallout game. They need to shake up their formula before it gets entirely too stale.

The Vault (again) being numbered "111" is a direct reference to Fallout 3 and everyone will get that but apart from gorgeous graphics (bear in mind it's a teaser) it makes me wonder what they are bringing to the series with this new game.

Among the things I don't want to see is more Brotherhood of Steel nonsense. FNV showed us what the Brotherhood should be like. At this point, watching this trailer all we can expect is that Bethesda will keep doing what they've done with Fallout 3.

Last but not least, I'm a dog person in real life but the dog thing is getting a bit old. I guess they've been looking for ways to make sure there was some sense of continuity with the Fallout series but comparing Fallout 3 to Fallout New Vegas there is no doubt in my mind that there is only one modern Fallout game and I doubt Fallout 4 is going to change that.

I cringed when I saw the F'N Brotherhood of Steel.

Fuck those guys. I don't ever want to see them again. I'd rather see the Enclave again even though it would make zero sense.

My brother jumped on the ceiling upon the announcement. I, however, am more on the cynical side. F3 left an absolutely awful taste in my mouth and until I know for sure F4 is a good game, I am going to stand away from it. I am NOT going to pre-order (preorders are asinine bollocks anyway) nor am I going to get it on launch.

I'm going to wait as well. I expect the hype will be strong with that one and that just like the Witcher 3 it's going to be dubbed the new Game of the Year long before getting released (which is absolutely ridiculous).

If it's anything like Fallout 3 I will still be getting it provided it has some decent mod support because that's what Bethesda games are good for, i.e. being modded.

That being said, I'm concerned about system requirements and optimization. It seems to me the trend of crappy PC ports is still going strong with the new gen of console games. There is absolutely no reason that a game that can run on a PS4 (I'm not going to mention the Xbox One as it is just terrible) can't run on my current machine unless it's a shitty port but I don't expect Bethesda to come up with the same quality Rockstar did with GTA 5 (which is a truly magnificent PC port).

Last but not least I'm so fed up with the Brotherhood of Steel being good guys. That's so stupid. Rolling Eyes

I still haven't been able to make New Vegas work on my computer... Sad

But that said, I look forward to see what is going to be Fallout 4's features. I rather liked Fallout 3, although I agree 1000% that is was repetitive as hell.

I've been wondering about the graphics as well. That parity with console garbage greatly annoys me, I didn't buy a sodding consope toplay a bastardized version of the game, I bought a PC to play those games in better wuality!

Although I can deal with inferior graphics, as long as thr controls aren't gimped up because the game was designed for consoles and has a PC port.
Case in point, Diablo 3. The interface is gimped and dumprd down to accomodate console peons and that brings my piss to a boil. Remember how good D2's interface was? How it felt like a proper PC game and not a bloody consoleport or a game engineered from the start to be dumped on those crappy low-end piles of toot?

Diablo 3 was streamlined to death but I thought it wasn't supposed to come to consoles and that console support was more of an afterthought.

In any case it's not the graphics that are the problem but the fact that it takes a freaking supercomputer to be able to get some decent performance from a PC port that runs on a freaking consoles.

I love the Assassin's Creed series and I'm happy to be able to run Unity on my PC but I was incredibly pissed at how badly Black Flag performed on the same PC. There is a HUGE gap between Unity and Black Flag so that game should run better. I've been playing Assassin's Creed Rogue and it runs incredibly well maxed out not because it's not comparable to Black Flag (the differences are minor) but simply because it is a great port and it's optimized for the PC.

Point in case the Witcher 3 has some crazy requirements on the PC and the same goes for the Witcher 2 at the time it came out (the same could be said about the first Witcher) and it's obvious that there has been a downgrade in graphics quality between the first trailers and the version that shipped to PC users. Ubisoft was crucified because they did the same thing with Watch Dogs (great game by the way and totally worth playing).

Don't get me started on the numerous bad ports or even broken ports available on Steam. GTA 5 is the major exception and it's great to see a game that actually takes advantage of the PC.

Back to Fallout 4, there is something worth mentioning and that's the fact that Fallout 3 (and Fallout New Vegas) had some terrible UI on the PC. You have to use mods to be able to make it look like a PC game on a computer screen and there is no reason to believe that Fallout 4 is going to be any different. I would love to be proven wrong but if Skyrim is any indication we can expect that Fallout 4 is going to be the sort of game you may want to play with a controller...

I can see people feeling nauseous at the mere idea of playing a first person shooter with a controller but the important thing is to remember that Fallout 3 is a terrible shooter. Fallout New Vegas did bring some ironsights to the game but it didn't improve much. There is a reason why VATS work the way it does in those games. Shooting sucks and that's a big deal considering. Anyone who has played any decent shooter in the last decades can tell that shooting in Fallout 3 feels mediocre at best and abysmal if you're not being charitable.

I hope Bethesda will take a page from Rage and Wolfenstein the New Order (which were published by Bethesda) and improve on shooting mechanics because that's a black mark on a game in which you're supposed to spend so much time shooting guns.

Yeah but one thing to keep in mind about AC -- Ubisoft subcontracts PC ports to third parties with questionable track record for good PC ports, so there's your answer. Ubisoft does not give a toss about PC despite what they say. I personally haven't played GTA V because to be blunt those games are of no interest to me, but I have seen the PC port, and Rockstar did do an AMAZING job on it. It is very well polished and quite clearly made with love by a company that truly cares about the quality of their games.

And yeah, I REALLY hope Bethesda take lessons from WNO. Bloody hell, why not let Machine Games have a crack at the Fallout license? They shat out absolute diamond-encrusted platinum in the form of Wolfenstein New Order, and if someone could rejuvenate the Fallout series, I am quite positive it would be those guys. Flying Wild Hog also shat out diamond-encrusted platinum in the form of Shadow Warrior.

Bethesda... please just publish the bloody game and let someone good do F4. But that's not going to happen, of course. The pessimist in me has entered the mindset that F4 will be garbage. If it is, I am right, if it's not, well it's a pleasant surprise. Which it's not going to be.

Maybe an explanation for the GTA PC ports is that they're not release at the same time. In fact, the PC version is always released at least a year later, so they take the time to properly adapt the game.

Rockstar, unlike Ubisoft, does the ports themselves and unlike Ubisoft they care about the quality of said port.

Ubisoft only cares about consoles and have no qualms selling a piss poor, botched PC port. They are a prime player in why the game market is so disgustingly rotten because of the AAA model.

Rockstar is far from perfect. GTA 4 was a terrible port. LA Noire is far from awesome. Rest my case.

I don't think Ubisoft is worse than EA or even Bethesda for that matter.

Nowadays consoles take precedence except when a game is a PC exclusive which is seemingly going to happen with XCOM 2.

EA is pond scum, and neither Ubisoft and Bethesda are better. I agree, Rockstar have some pretty awful ports, but GTA V is very, very well done, and stands out in a sea of horrible ports and AAA garbage. The GTA V port puts ALL Ubisoft ports to shame.

I despise consoles taking priority over PC. It sounds logical to me to make the better PC version first, and then dumb down the final product for the console peons, and not the opposite.

Gaming doesn't make a lot of sense those days. Then again, AAA will be the modern equivalent of Atari back in 1983. It's just a matter of time.

Not much makes sense when it comes to videogames and business.

I guess the reason consoles take precedence is that big companies have to give people some reason for buying overpriced consoles so they can have the privilege of buying overpriced games that are locked at 30 frames per second at lower resolutions.

GTA 5 is indeed an exception but you have to bear in mind that they've made the most out of the console versions first so now they can sell it a second time as the definitive experience on the PC.

Assassin's Creed Rogue is a good port but it's far less ambitious, still it performs extremely well compared to Black Flag.

In that respect most games are not very remarkable with varying degrees of suckiness. Truth is any game that runs on a console should run better on any decent PC and that's simply not the case.

If it wasn't for crappy ports the PC version of any game would be the best by far and there would be no reason for people to own consoles...

That being said GTA 5 is an outstanding port that puts to shame all other ports and last but not least it doesn't take a monster PC to run.

Steam popped up a Fallout weekend sale, and F4 is up for pre-order for a whopping $70. For a game which only exists through one trailer, this is absolutely asinine.

Stupid, stupid preorder culture.

The only game I ever preordered was Baldur's Gate II. Even then, all the unique stuff I got with the preorder was available in later editions... :/ I see no reason to pay so much for a game that, if you wait a few months, you'll get at least half price.

Hatred is the only game I preordered in many, many years, and it was $20, not 70 like F4.

It is completely stupid to put that much money on a game one hasn't even played yet. It's a stupid gamble, and the house always wins.

Too much hype is a very sad thing.

Let's take the Witcher 3 for instance, the game sold a million copies and had countless awards before the actual release. That's crazy.

I've played through the tutorial and it was nice but it wasn't a life changing experience. In fact it made me think of Assassin's Creed a lot (with the parkour, Witcher vision and combat mostly). What I've read is that the game is constantly being patched because of bugs and issues that look as bad as Assassin's Creed Unity on release...

And still people are raving about this game.

Let's face it, Fallout 4 can be an entirely mediocre Bethesda title, i.e. a sandbox with an asinine story and it will still sell like hotcakes.

Bethesda did screw Obsidian over with Fallout New Vegas because of the metacritic score and now they're milking the Fallout two-headed cow like there is no tomorrow (which is why they had GOG take down Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics because they didn't want a DRM free version available online).

And that explains why GOG gave away so many of those games for free.  I suspect that was a real 'Up yours Bethesda!' moment.

What struck me about the Fallout 4 trailer on Steam is that there is nothing new being shown.  Do we think Bethesda are being coy?

Exactly. They had very little time to give away as many copies as possible and they did it just to piss Bethesda off and (of course) to get some well deserved publicity. Smile

I don't want to be nasty but I don't expect anything new with Fallout 4. Bethesda is not going to alienate people by bringing something new or interesting to the formula so you can expect the same old routine.

Hopefully there will be some much needed improvements in the writing. It won't be too hard considering how lame the writing came across in Fallout 3 (especially in comparison to Fallout New Vegas).

Fallout 4 News 13493

The only good thing I can think of is that they asked some of the good people who work for Id Software to help them make the shooting better.

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are terrible games as far as shooting is concerned. Take Rage (developed by Id Software and published by Bethesda) and you'll have an idea of how satisfying shooting can be in a true FPS. It would be quite an improvement.

I'm not, the people responsible for Rage worked on Wolfenstein TNO (it shows). Rage has a lot more in common with Fallout when it comes to the setting (and it doesn't have the over the top dual wielding). Fallout 4 News 741682
