I started playing Darkest Dungeon on Saturday afternoon and have struggled to put it down. After two nights of going to bed at 2am, I realised this game has something pretty darn special about it.

I love the way you're the 5th character in the room. You're the employer who has selected and hired a group of mercenaries to clear out the demons and beasts that have infected the land after your Father has opened a doorway to hell in the family home. As they travel through ruins, warrens and countryside battling these monsters, the mercenaries collect your family artefacts, deeds and portraits. These allow you to upgrade buildings in a nearby Hamlet, where your mercenaries recover from the stress and strain of adventuring.

Fights are hard, mercenaries become psychologically distressed. As the stress levels rise. characters develop unhealthy quirks, begin bitching and their behaviour is affected. This is just fab. Not since Dragon Age Origins (and Baldur's Gate before DAO) has dialogue been such fun. I also love the mechanics of this game, despite being turn-based, the fights are fluid and exciting.

As for the 2D graphics - love them! I find them quite gorgeous. They really create the doom and gloom environment which the narrative, dialogue and action serve to build on and sustain.

Terrific game, fresh, exciting and dynamic. And very polished considering it's Early Access. Excuse me, I'm off to go play.......

P.S. When I stopped at 11am this morning to take Echo out, I realised I'd played Darkest Dungeon for 22 hours Shocked

Good to see you're having fun. Smile

I personally love the blend of dark, gothic fantasy with Cthulhuesque elements. That's definitely a game I'll be playing a lot once it gets out of Early Access in a few months.

I...have to...play....now......

For an Early Access game it's been bug free and seamless so far.

Indeed, I've only played six hours and they've been bug free and the game feels incredibly polished for an Early Access title.

Which class is your favourite? I like the Plague Doctor and Jester but the Leper is the one I really like to have in my merry little band.

Man-at-Arms FTW

I love this game, but it makes me rage so hard I often end up rage quitting. I neee to try and keep my temper in check and actually play this through the end.

This is a shining example of everything that is good about early access.

I totally agree with your EA comment Zarak.

This is an incredibly hard game, but I love the challenge.

My favourite character is Grave Digger, but I'm finding it essential to have a Seeker in my party for healing. I've managed to get a roster including 8 at level 1, but found I needed to grind away in a number of short dungeons to achieve this.

It's essential to recognise when to retreat, but retreating with overly stressed mercenaries that have negative quirks is costly to fix. I now get rid of 0 level characters that I've had to use to boost party numbers whilst healing those I'm trying to develop.

This is RPG with a real level of strategy.

I wouldn't call it an RPG but the strategy is there and I love it.

We just have to accept the fact that your guys are doomed and that facing the odds they're facing the smart money is definitely not on them.

I've played a lot of Call of Cthulhu pen and paper RPG and in this game you can only expect your character to die a gruesome death or become completely batshit crazy which is exactly what we should look forward to playing Darkest Dungeon.

Managing to kill a Shambler brought an unequivocal sense of victory despite the party becoming certifiably nuts. drunken

Urgh. Shamblers. I hate those twats more than I hate the Brotherhood of Steel. I encountered one and it wiped out my entire party, one Hellion, one Crusader, one Seeker and an Occultist. I managed to kill it with two Man-at-Arms, a Seeker and a Plague Doctor... only to bump into ANOTHER ONE just a few rooms down.

Rage ensued. Inanimate objets got smashed. Then I got wiped out again. Alt+F4.

The Red Hook team have released The Cove and it's a super addition to the current game.

The design of The Cove has a wonderful Lovecraftian feel to it and this is enhanced by the colours chosen.  Some of the design is foregrounded so your party has the feel of walking through an area instead of in front of it.  Needless to say, some dislike this, but I found it fine.  The monsters encountered by the player have been given some different abilities to those met earlier in the game, which is great to see.

The Devs have also taken into account some of the suggestions made by players.  Now when you kill an enemy, instead of a pile of dust on the floor, there is a corpse that represents the monster killed.  Also, when returning to the hamlet with food, shovels etc., these are included in with the treasure you've collected, so the player gets the money spent on these unused items back in their coffers.

There have been tweaks to trinkets which re-balances some of them.

All in all, a terrific addition and series of upgrades to the Darkest Dungeon.

Red Hook are amazing. This is the cream that will rise to the top when the overbloated AAA industry crashes worst than in '83. It's just a matter of time.

DD is still a fledgling game and it's already GoTY material in my book. Even though I can't play it without raising my blood pressure to an unhealthy degree.

I agree Skorp, DD is an incredible game considering it's current status. It's good news that the devs are so active on the forum. There is a real sense of feedback being worthwhile, although some of it is clearly trollish dribble and other posts are from shocked individuals who clearly didn't read the information which loads up with the game. i.e. This is too hard..... Tone down heart attacks...... My party just got slaughtered by a Shambler you need to make the monsters easier to kill...... There's not a beginners party option in The Cove (yes there is, it's just luck of the draw as to what level of dungeon loads)

I love how hard the game is and the fact each time you think you've got to grips with what to do it kicks your butt.

I'm waiting for the full release but what I've seen so far is really encouraging. The idea is absolutely grand and the implementation definitely makes the whole thing immensely enjoyable.

I've played a little with a mod for X-Com Enemy Within and in some ways the brutal and unforgiving difficulty made me think of this gem. Smile

Yep.  There's a future update to come with town events and one or two new classes, but they've done a good job making the game more balanced than it was.  I stopped playing after over 100 hours to wait for the release.  Pleased I did.

They've included some great new enemies.  The Collector who I found roaming a Ruin corridor is just great and there's a new party enemy called something like The Judgement (can't quite remember) but he's effectively a dead highwayman who moans and wails increasing stress.  I find him pretty funny, they've given his voice a great tone..

cat

p.s. Took note of the correct name - he's called the madman. I think he's a hoot.
