Instead of highjacking... this deserves it's own topic.

I didn't plan on getting Thief, TBH, but the bloody PC version of the Stick of Truth was 65$... so I said screw it and since I already have Reaper of Souls, I got Thief. I have played Thief Dark Project to death. I am a huge fanboy of stealth games, and I play sneaky whenever possible. Playing a Sniper in New Vegas was a sheer blast, and I played an Assassin in Morrowind, Ob and Skyrim.

Dark Project was an absolutely unforgiving game and I had my share of rage quits. The reboot struck me as easier, sure there are some ballbusting moments in there but for the most part I had an easier time with it than I did Dark Project.

The game looks awesome. I don't care about graphics but it looks damn fine.

The absence of freedom of jumping was an irritant for me -- of course there are jumps but usually they are only triggered on certain perticular spots.

I had no problem with the upgrade system. Upgrading abilities (more on that later), thief gear to crack those tougher locks later down the line, trinkets, stuff like that.

Speaking of abilities, Garrett has one called Focus. With that, everything that is relevent glows blue, and upgraded it shows unique items and collection items. I refused to use it. The fun of stealth games is exploring and finding loot on your own. Simply put, it's cheese.

I bought the Master Thief edition with 3 DLC, one is a bank heist, which is BLOODY AMAZING. It had my blood rushing with the thrill of danger and I absolutely enjoyed it.

Bottom line -- if you liked Dark Project, it's worth checking out.

Correct me if I'm wrong Z but Thief is a 1st person game.

EDIT: by the way there is a pretty sweet offer right now on GMG with 66% off and even more with this 20% voucher code: O3H7FE-D4NFO0-F0LIGK

http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/fr/en/pc/games/action/thief-master-thief-edition/

So the Master Edition should be around 15 dollars (or euros). Not sure it comes with DLC but it's a great deal and I would get it if I hadn't already spent all the money I had left for games on Age of Wonders 3.

EDIT2: went back to check if the deal was still there and well it's finished. The price is back to 50 euros.  Sad

You are absolutely correct, bro.

Do get the Master Thief edition -- the DLC are worth it. The bank heist was AWESOME.

Good to know it includes the DLC. When it comes to that sort of thing I much prefer getting them in a bundle if I can and not piecemeal (unless of course we're talking about some multiplayer only drek in which case better skip it altogether).

So basically combat is not the way to do things in Thief (you don't even have a dagger). It makes sense but I've seen some pics with strange looking arrows. Does it mean you're playing something like a steampunk version of Green Arrow?

Remember Dark Project and it's plethora of arrow types like the water arrows to douse torches and stuff like that? They are present in this game as well.

Never played Dark Project but the idea of playing with gadget arrows like Green Arrow in the comics sound pretty amazing.

I've had a hard time getting into old 3D games. Besides back in the days FPS gave me motion sickness so most games that are more than 10 years old will probably have that effect on me.

It's funny we should talk about this game. I still consider to this day that Thief : The dark project (1998) is the highmark of stealth games. That highmark still hasn't been beaten (I still consider all stealth games, like Hitman, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell or Alpha Protocol) inferior in it's genre, and that says a lot. I played Dark project so much it was ridiculous. I didn't really have a hard time at it per se, my most frustrating moments weren't the difficulty of the game, but finding my way in the mazes from hell most levels were.

What was nice about the game was the enemies sensitivity to sound. You couldn't walk silently. Whatever you did on a marble floor, the guards would hear. And you also had a light meter, which told you how exposed you were. When the meter was at its lowest (when you're in complete darkness), then the guards can't see you, even if they look straight at you. The trick was finding these spots. And I also found the guards had an incredible AI for the time. They could call out help, they would "walk the rounds" around the castle (as oppose to walk back and forth in a two meter radius like 2013's Alpha Protocol). It was predictable, but a little less predictable than most games, even today, I think. You could also use a blackjack to knock out a guard, but you had to do something with the body, because if a guard walked by, they would react to it (the body wouldn't disappear as soon as you look away, like today's games).

Haha, you guys brought back memories with the water arrows. I used to use them like there was no tomorrow. There was also the sound arrows (you shoot it and it generates sound around the arrow so the guards investigate in that area) or the moss arrows (it created moss around where the arrow impacted so your footsteps would be silenced).

The game lost me a bit when it started to get supernatural, with zombies, tree creatures and the like. I didn't so much like the second game (The Metal ages), which was a weird steampunk game, but the third (Deadly Shadows), was pretty nice.

Well, Dark Project was steampunk-ish as well, but I haven't played the Metal Ages, but Deadly Shadows was a blast as well.

The plot in Dark Project was garbage, and I admit all the supernatural stuff turned me off as well, but Dark Project remains a solid game through and through.

The reboot has that essence, and I am enjoying the game big time. It is a solid effort but Dark Project remains undethronable in my book.

I am now deep in Chapter 3, and I love this game to death. The plot is, like Dark Project, on the garbage side, but it is not enough to dent my enjoyment of this game.

Stealth games give me a rush of adrenaline and get my blood flowing, and I LOVE that. The reboot, desoite it's flaws I admit is growing on me more and more by the day, and if Eidos were to rerelease a modernized version of Dark Project, I would get it in a heartbeat.

Cara, Triple-Cacti... FFS, GET THIS GAME. NOW.

PostSubject: Re: Thief 4/Thief reboot   Thief 4/Thief reboot I_icon_minitimeFri May 09, 2014 7:41 pm

I've bought the game during a flash sale (I hesitated and missed the really sweet deal three weeks ago). So now I've got the base game and the Bank Heist DLC and I've purchased the Opportunist, Predator and Ghost boosters (not sure if this was a good idea but I had some money on my steam wallet from selling trading cards). The only DLC I don't have is the Forsaken DLC which appears to be a challenge map (so it can wait).

My only concern right now is that I have too many games to play.

EDIT: playing the prologue and I'm already stuck, met Erin and followed her to the alley, picked the scissors and the purse and now I have to get through the two guards who are just standing there... I can get to the cart on the left but I can't do anything with it. I looked around but I can't sneak past them and I can't confront them either. I must be doing something wrong but it's downright annoying. Any hint?

EDIT2: turns out I wasn't peeking and that was preventing a script from kicking in. I've played a little more and completed the prologue and reached the watchtower (it says I've finished chapter 1 but that was quick I guess I'll have to replay it and look for hidden stuff I really enjoyed the jeweller's shop by the way).

The bank heist is bloody awesome. It had my adrenaline flowing and my blood rushing all the way through to the end. I haven't yet tackled the other DLC as I am finishing the game first, but going back and looking for the missed loot, IMO, adds replayability.

I got the achievement for not having been detected once in the entire chapter. I dig it, but that's the way it should be, not a bloody achievement.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the game so far, brother.

I got that one too and I totally agree, if you're being detected it means you're doing it the wrong way.

Besides I can see why people keep comparing this game to Dishonored but they are really different games (Dishonored being stabby friendly or even stabby happy); you're not even supposed to play them in the same way (for starters you don't have supernatural powers in Thief and that makes a big difference). Last but not least the art is radically different (and I like both).

I really get why you like this game.

Technically Garrett's Focus ability -- AKA N00B mode -- could count as supernatural. But this ability is stupid cheese so let us never speak of it again.

The problem is that it doesn't make sense. In the Batman games they could get away with the detective mode thanks to all the high tech gizmos Bats carries around but in the context of this game we don't get any logical explanation. Bottom line playing like that is as satisfying as watching Scrappy Doo solve mysteries.

There is a menu to customize game options so maybe that can be turned off somewhere.

I am afraid it's relates to the plotline... so no way to get rid of it. I pretend it doesn't exist, and I even remapped the key that triggers it.

Cheese is good on a pizza, not in a game.

I replayed the bank heise. I bloody love this DLC, I think I am becoming addicted to the adrenaline rush...
