[New Vegas] NCR Armor Replacer

The idea I have is to change the vanilla armor to something completely different.

I know other modders have done this, but with the DLC Dead Money, I came up with an idea.

Take Sierra Madre Reinforced armor and remove Security from the back and replace it with the text NCR and with the bear logo on the left front breast.

I feel it's still lore friendly if your into being lore. I don't mind either way, I just like enhancing my game play.

That could be done and it shouldn't be too difficult either. You can extract the texture files from the BSA archives with this tool.

Then it's just a matter of opening the DDS (paint.NET is easy to use and very convenient) to copy the bear symbol and put NCR on the back. Of course this must be done for both male and female versions. Do you intend to change the colour of security armours (the yellow parts?) or keep it that way. Using an army camo would require more work.

Since you want to make a replacer it's just a matter of editing the paths linking the models in game.

The main thing is knowing what armours you want to replace or if you're going to replace every NCR armours. Replacing only one type won't change the look of NCR troops but replacing all the armours with only one type will be a bit boring in the end.

If you want a big replacer mod then you have to plan ahead and decide how you want to modify the way NCR troops look.

I haven't talked about headgear because custom headgear require the use of NVedit to flag it correctly.

Yea, was just an idea. There's no way I can do it at all. I don't see WHY it would be boring to make them ALL the same though. Military issue is about conformity. You must think alike and look alike.

I guess if someone was to take this project on, if you want to single out senior officers, throw some NCR berets on them and maybe reverse the colors for females.

Back on topic I was simply thinking about looks in game, from a military viewpoint you're certainly right. Now I'm not sure the yellow back drop would be fitting but if I remember correctly I think we can use two different texture sets, one for the armour add on (the bulletproof pad) and one for the clothing and that should give us some leeway (we can edit the textures separately and thus we won't have to worry about saturation and gamma on the bulletproof part which will look much better with a texture that is closer to the original texture). The clothing looks too "yellow" in my opinion so it may be better if it was more brownish.

It's just a quick edit but I think it doesn't look that bad after all. I'm thinking about replacing the NCR power armours in my game with these outfits as I don't like the idea (or the look) of salvaged power armours.

I'll give it a shot after I reinstall Windows 7. I'm havin some mean issues right now.

I've just updated some major mods I'm currently using. I'll post a screenshot when I get there as I've decided to use this to replace the NCR power armour.

Well, it is a pain. I'm not relishing the fact of doing this. I have backed up most of my music and my games so far. Fallout 3 is being a pain in the backside. I have about an hour and a half left on my back up, then it's off to the races.

By the way I didn't change the original colour. IMO it looks much better in game than it does when you look at the DDS.

Make sure it is set as player owned. Last guy I had place an item in game, I had to steal it and lose karma.

Good work on the outfit! That's a pretty good start.

The only trouble is that the bear is reversed for the female version (the star should be on the left of the bear) and I think it's the same with the right shoulder of the male version.

One more thing, you should use another Biped Model List, preferably one matching the mesh you're using so here you may want to set it to "NONE" as the RangerList you're currently using will mess up the hands/gloves (they won't connect).

To put an item in game click and drag it to the right in the world window (select the game world or interior first) you can lower the item (make it fall) by pressing the 'F' key, you can switch the camera by hitting 'C' and if you get lost use the filter to find the item on the list and double click on the name to find it (you can also right click in the item list on the left and select the use info to open a box indicating where the item is used/placed).

I've put it on Contreras's bed in McCarran, the ownership flag should be correct.

Also if you're uploading it to the Nexus you may consider making an alternate version with a little more DT (optional) because you can bet players are going to comment on that.

You can also make an optional esp that adds it to a few NPCs who logically could be wearing it (off duty NCR grunts?) that would be cool.

If you didn't make this then I advise you not to upload it to the Nexus unless you get proper authorization (in that case you should keep a copy of the message or mail in which the original modder allows you to reupload his or her assets) or if the modder stipulates that his work is to be treated like a resource (in which case modders generally want to be credited for the original work). You could get banned from the Nexus if someone reported you.

He released it as a free resource. Been banned from there before, for posting that I moved my NV folder out of the SteamApps folder.

Sorry, it's really late and I won't be able to do that tonight. I'll try to do it tomorrow when I return home.

I will be able to get it done later. Am installing NV now. As for finding away around Steam wasn't the issue. Steam will still load when I load the game. I was having issues with NVSE working properly, so I moved it and then NVSE worked without a hitch. That's what I posted and got banned for it.

Their zero tolerance policy can be pretty harsh especially if you're not known around their sites. They're trying very hard to run a clean place with no piracy and stuff and given the sheer size of the file database it must be really hard. Nevertheless getting banned for this is not cool -since you didn't say anything about bypassing Steam.

I almost got into problems when I uploaded a picture of the endgame boss in DAO Awakening. The monster had nipples and the picture was from the vanilla game but since they have a zero tolerance policy on nudity I was told that I could get in trouble if anyone reported it... I can understand the need for such rules though.

I understand your feeling but IMO it's a great place nevertheless as it gathers loads of people and provides some reliable free hosting service. You've got to take the good with the bad. There are some trolls there but there are some really cool modders and players as well.

Posting links for mods here is a possibility but we can't host them (unfortunately) and the problem with free file hosting is that these links are only available for a while whereas on the Nexus you can still find files dating back from several years.
