After a couple of frustrating months with Gentoo, I decided to ditch it. Do I think it's the best there was, is and ever will be? In many regards, yes, I stand by that claim.
But Gentoo is a high maintenance, temperamental beast. I stopped counting the number of times where I couldn't update because of slot collisions, circle dependencies and so on.
Gentoo requires a strict maintenance regimen, and quite frankly, I do not have the discipline for it.
So my ThiccPad E460 and Fujitsu Lifebook have been switched back to Void, and I have been all the better off since.
But, I kept thinking -- what's next on my quest for knowledge?
And the answer is obvious. Instead of pissing around with prebuilt distros...
It is time to make my own. So I undertook the next step in insanity called Linux from Scratch.
LFS is a distribution you build, as the title says, from scratch.
If Arch is a prebuilt log cabin that just needs assembly, Gentoo a piece of land, some blueprints and a horse... LFS is chopping down the wood from the land to make your own house, from scratch.
My journey with LFS has been a bit hectic, as expected. The current build is my 4th attempt. And by now, I am deep in Chapter 8, building my own system.
So what is the point of LFS? Firstly, a crash course in Linux and a fantastic learning experience. A difficult but rewarding journey.
And with that, comes an announcement. This LFS build, if successful, will become my own distro. Which I have called Loki Linux. I even have some artwork and a tagline made for it.
This is happening. It likely won't be your cup of tea, Carabas, but doing this will allow me to add distro creator and maintener to my skills.
Here is the artwork and tagline
