| I think there are games that are universally acknowledged as being must play games, games that any serious gamer is supposed to have played at least once. Now I'm going to say that it's ok if you happen not to like one of these games. You probably had high expectations and you've been told so much about how great the story is and so on and so forth...
Anyway, here I am tonight, officially giving up on the Mass Effect series. I wish I tried getting into these games back when they first came out... Things might have been different six or seven years ago. Mass Effect 1 feels old and even if 2 looks less dated the game play is nothing to write home about (probably my fault for having played a few real 3rd person shooters).
Maybe it's my fault for playing too many Bioware games in the past but I can see the formula at work and playing ME it feels pretty generic, in other words once you can see the cogs the magic is gone. I do like the setting but the whole chosen hero/spectre bla bla bla gets old terribly fast.
So what does that leave me with? A game that I have to force myself to start and that is hogging some of my disk space for the only reason that it is almost universally revered among CRPG fanatics.
It just doesn't click with me and add the annoyance of having to log in to take advantage of the DLC and the cumbersome EA thingy and you have a recipe for a game that feels too much like the idea of getting a colonoscopy instead of having fun.
So what about you, is there a game that most people love but that to you feels too much like making a visit to the dentist's? |

| I haven't been able to get into the Witcher series. It took me three or four attempts to get through the first one. I bought the second, and have started it twice. At this point, I've given up on the franchise. You can't force yourself to like something. I don't hate it; it just feels more like work than play. |

I don't like Skyrim. I'm sorry it's not a must play game. I think it was overhyped. |

| I've managed to soldier through Mass Effect at last.
It turns out that all the things I've pointed out back in 2014 are still true but some mods really helped.
Mass Effect 1 is a pain when it comes to repetitive stuff that are bloody annoying but despite all these faults it's still a Bioware game. Looking at how their games have evolved and drawing parallels between the Mass Effect series and Dragon Age I'm not surprised that Dragon Age Inquisition has turned out to be what it is now.
I do believe that Mass Effect Andromeda will be a lot like Dragon Age Inquisition but I'm not sure it will be so terrible considering that what is a bad thing for Dragon Age (dumbing down an RPG into an action oriented power fantasy) is a bad thing for Mass Effect (let's face it, Mass Effect 3 is already a third person shooter with RPG elements).
I may believe that would work better for Mass Effect, I still wish they wouldn't apply the same recipe to Dragon Age. |

| 1. Oooh, interesting thread, and nice excavation work. 2. Bloody 'Gone Home'. I... might go on a rant here. A little. For a while. 3. To elaborate: normally I enjoy indie games, especially the subversive and inclusive ones. 'Gone Home' was lauded as both. I found it to be neither the former, nor the latter. - Avast! Thar be spoilers ahead!:
I mean... seriously, the big reveal and solution was the fact that the protagonist's sister discovered she was a lesbian, and escaped with another girl? I mean, bloody hell, that's like a plot of yet another coming of age lesbian movie, and as a non-hetero woman, let me just say: WE'VE SEEN ENOUGH OF THAT, ALREADY. It's not in the least inventive. This game came out in 2014, for fuck's sake. Not 1995.
It's not about it being an exploration game: it's about the fact that the secrets to be explored were too damn typical to be of any interest, at least to me. Ah, and for a game that is supposedly feminist, it certainly had no qualms about employing some problematic tropes for middle aged, hetero women: as evidenced by what can be found in her room, the mother - Arrrr!:
enjoys sewing, reads trashy romance novels, is dissatisfied with her marriage, and writes letters on the subject to a female friend. Apparently, as evidenced by the other woman's reply, they mostly talk about men .
That's... all that the player can find out about her, more or less. Well, let's just say I was not exactly impressed. |

| I played the Infamous first game on PS3. I thought it was a garbage mess, couldn't stand it for more than 15 minutes (good thing it was free with the purchase of the PS3 system). But apparently, most people who have played it raved about it. |

| Reading this thread again I can see I wasn't far off about Andromeda. What urged me to post this thread was the fact that I knew that I was supposed to be having fun with Mass Effect considering it ticked all the right boxes for me. With hindsight all I can say is that the shoddy PC version is to be blamed for that. They made an action focused RPG but they didn't implement controller support for the PC and that is complete BS. If we're meant to play the game as an action RPG then they should allow us to play with a pad while reclining on a couch instead of forcing us to be crouching over a keyboard. What allowed me to enjoy these games were the mods that brought controller support to the PC and improved the graphics immensely (yes, I'm that shallow). I could go on about the love hate relationship I have with the Witcher series (absolutely loved the 1st, got bored with the 2nd and bloody annoyed by the 3rd) but I think that's enough ranting for one day. |
